Professional development and continuous learning are at the heart of a long career as a paralegal. While NALA and NFPA offer continuing education materials, NALA offers the paralegal community comprehensive professional development programs that cover nearly every topic in the legal profession. Their Continuing Legal Education (CLE) opportunities are available year-round in cities across the country, and the organization also occasionally offers a free webinar focused on interpersonal skills for allied legal professionals. The NFPA also offers several continuing education courses to assist paralegals in their day-to-day activities and prepare them to take industry certification exams. Most positions are looking for a professional with a degree above an associate`s degree. Even when it comes to certifications like Project Management Professional (PMP) or Information Governance Professional (IGP), technology software certifications (like Microsoft or Relativity), and even paralegal certifications, there are two schools of thought about whether it makes sense to have a certification for career advancement. Some legal operations managers are not looking for specific certifications to demonstrate mastery of certain skills for a legal operations position. Instead, they look for concrete examples of a candidate`s ability to master the necessary core competencies. Other executives seek not only the core competencies that make up a strong legal operations professional, but also the standardization of the core competencies that come with earning and maintaining professional certification.
